Lives and works in Prague

Jakub Špaňhel is a painter of the visible world, tangible objects, creating series of paintings depicting flowers, nudes, flowerpots, crosses, beer glasses, goats, lamps, architecture… His work deals with themes that seem quotidian, but which in his hands are transformed into dream-like, magical or even ritualistic painting. This emotional effect is supported by his characteristic means of expression: large or even monumental formats, ecstatic brushwork, dark, almost monochrome colour schemes, often bearing the traces of wildly sprayed radiant pigments (gold, copper, …), the content simplified and reduced to mere hints. Jakub Špaňhel also works in smaller formats, especially graphic pieces and work with mechanic roller techniques.
